For all of those curious about rock climbing in Nicaragua, we have taken great efforts over the last couple of years to help develop the sport in a responsible manner.  We have braved thick bramble, rumors of tigers, lots and lots of crumbly rock, and many confused stares to find what we have, so please bring your climbing shoes when you come to Nicaragua!
In and around Matagalpa:
There are a number of great bouldering areas just outside of the city (walking distance), most notably in "La Finca de Sergio".  This is the farm of a friend of the Hostels - the furniture maker who lives on the road to Apante.  Ask the front desk and they will be able to direct you.  There are also some promising rocks in the Apante Natural reserve.

If you are in for a bigger adventure, there are some major cliffs just outside the city.  The two largest are the backside of "Cerro del Toro" and the spectacular multi-pitch "Empalme San Ramon".  Cerro del Toro has some boulders on top that we have used as anchors to rappel, but the larger Emplame San Ramon is barren on top. Our friend, Alvaro is a burgeoning climber, has some gear, and has just started up a little tour company, Northern Nicaragua Tours.
RockClimbing / Escalada
Somoto
The "Canyon de Somoto" is about an hour and half drive from the La Buena Onda.  There is a lifetime of climbing here including bouldering, deep water soloing, top roping, and great potential to develop into a sport climbing area (amazing amphitheaters).  See our Facebook gallery for a better idea.  We received a generous donation of gear from climber Chris Irwin and helped our friend Gonzalo at Namancambre Tours set up to take people out climbing (top roping).  They know the area very well and are very keen on developing the canyon.
For those with drills and bolting experience - please check with Alvaro and/or Gonzalo as to local regulations, and to meet with local authorities together with you. You should clear any developments with local authorities and as a pioneer in rock climbing for the country, set a good example. Encourage the park and land authorities to see this as a way to a) generate more tourism, and b) encourage conservation. I would also empower Alvaro and Gonzalo to be the spokespeople. We can accomplish a lot more in the future if its a local initiative.
Please contact us if you have any questions or would like more info.  Enjoy!
